Volunteer Spotlight: March

Abbie Henrickson
Sterling, VA

Abbie dedicated many hours to NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia during legislative session, including making multiple trips to Richmond in opposition to anti-choice legislation, delivering petitions in support of Planned Parenthood, and lobbying legislators during our Women’s Equality Coalition Lobby Day. Thank you, Abbie, for your steadfast commitment to reproductive freedom!
What makes you pro-choice?

Every woman has the right to control her fertility, and every woman has the right to choose whether or not to carry any pregnancy to term. While she is free to consult family, friends, and medical professionals about her choices, she is the only one who can make the final decisions.

What made you decide to get involved with NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia?

It seemed a logical choice after signing up for ACA Supreme Court rallies with NARAL Pro-Choice America. I was looking for local pro-choice advocacy opportunities, and NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia asked. My only regret is that it took me as long as it did to start volunteering.

What’s been your favorite or most meaningful NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia event?

Rather than one event, it was series of events: In conjunction with Planned Parenthood, staff and many volunteers lobbied against HB 1090, which defunded Planned Parenthood. We would head to Richmond, usually with little notice, and made our voices heard.

What advice would you give to other volunteers or activists looking to support NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia’s work?

Opportunities for supporting NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia’s work abound—even if all you can do is sign online petitions and make donations, you are making a difference. United we can accomplish great things.

Tell us a fun fact about you!

I am a Dungeons and Dragons Dungeon Master.
