Forty years ago today on January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court issued its landmark ruling in the Roe v. Wade case that recognized a woman’s right to privacy in deciding whether or not to terminate a pregnancy and invalidated laws that were on the books in nearly two-thirds of states at that time banning abortion in nearly all circumstances.
Since then, while a woman’s right to control her personal reproductive decisions has been enshrined in constitutional law, it has been far from safe from lawmakers who continue trying to make it a right in name only through policies that restrict access to birth control, abortion, accurate sex education, and even the health care services and resources necessary to choose to parent.
That’s why as we commemorate Roe v. Wade’s 40th anniversary today, we remember that as far as we’ve come, we still have a great deal of work to do to make sure that the promise of Roe –– not just the right to safe, legal abortion, but a woman’s fundamental right to equality, bodily autonomy, and the ability to make the decisions that are best for herself and her family — are a reality for all.
