We wanted to give you a preview of a couple of the great speakers and special guests you’ll get to see at this year’s Power of Choice: Shelby Knox and Delegate Charniele Herring!
Keynote Speaker: Shelby Knox
We’re very excited to have prominent young feminist organizer, activist and writer Shelby Knox as our guest speaker for this year’s event! Though only in her 20s, Shelby has been a leader in reproductive justice and health activism for a decade. She became nationally known in 2005 as the subject of the critically-acclaimed documentary The Education of Shelby Knox, which chronicled her activism for comprehensive sex education as a high school student in Lubbock, TX. Following high school, Shelby earned a degree in political science from the University of Texas at Austin. Today, she identifies herself as an “itinerant feminist organizer,” working as the Director of Organizing, Women’s Rights at Change.org and traveling across the country doing trainings, workshops and civil disobedience in the name of reproductive justice and sexual health. She is a leading voice on the latest generations of women’s rights activists and the future of the reproductive rights and justice movement.
Since high school, Shelby has been a prominent opponent of ineffective “abstinence only until marriage” sex education curricula and its negative impacts on reproductive health and rights. In 2008 at the age of 21, Shelby testified before the House Oversight Committee on the failures of “abstinence only” education:
Shelby has appeared on “The Today Show,” “The Daily Show,” “Good Morning America,” and “Hardball,” in the pages of Glamour, Bust, and Seventeen, and has sat down with everyone from Dr. Phil to Al Franken to discuss sex education and youth activism. She’s been profiled by The New York Times and Marie Claire Magazine, among other publications. Her writing has also been featured on The Huffington Post.
The Aggie Wolf Defender of Choice Award Recipient: Delegate Charniele L. Herring
At this year’s Power of Choice reception, our Defender of Choice award will be presented to Delegate Charniele L. Herring. Del. Herring, who represents parts of Alexandria and Fairfax County in the House of Delegates, is one of the Commonwealth’s leading voices against escalating attacks on women’s rights and health care by Virginia’s government. As the chair of the General Assembly’s Reproductive Health Caucus, Del. Herring led the charge both on and off the House floor against anti-choice bills in the 2012 General Assembly session, including the mandatory ultrasound and waiting period bill that received so much attention.
Here is Del. Herring speaking out against the mandatory ultrasound bill on the floor:
Del. Herring also appeared on a variety of news programs during the debate over the mandatory ultrasound bill, including MSNBC’s “The Ed Show,” to call out anti-choice legislators and Gov. McDonnell for this egregious legislation.
Del. Herring also serves as House Minority Whip, the first woman to hold the position of whip in Virginia General Assembly history. With her election in 2009, she became the first African-American woman to represent Northern Virginia in the state legislature.
We are proud to honor Del. Herring as one of our strongest legislative allies in Richmond, and hope that you’ll join us at Power of Choice to thank her and all the other pro-choice lawmakers who stand up for women’s rights and health in the General Assembly.
Get your Power of Choice tickets today and join us to see these great pro-choice advocates in person!
