We’re less than two weeks away from one of the biggest elections for reproductive choice in Virginia in years. On Tuesday, November 8, Virginians will go to the polls to vote on all 140 General Assembly seats. All this week on the blog, we are spotlighting pro-choice candidates of the day in key races across the state, so you know who will stand up for women’s rights and health in Richmond and who we’re working to help elect this fall!
Our next candidate spotlight brings us to Senate District 39, which contains the western part of the City of Alexandria, much of southern Fairfax County, and parts of Prince William County.
In this race, Senator George Barker is the pro-choice candidate.
Senator George Lincoln Barker has been a constant 100-percent pro-choice champion during his time in the state Senate. Earlier this year, he stood up against politically-motivated regulations that place women’s access to abortion in jeopardy. He has also worked to protect women’s rights and health by seeking to extend protective order protections for victims of intimate and dating violence.
Like Senator Houck and Senator Edwards who we highlighted earlier this week, Senator Barker is also a vital member of the Senate Committee on Education and Health, which is an important check on the relentless anti-choice legislation coming up from the House of Delegates and supported by Governor McDonnell.
Senator Barker’s opponent is anti-choice candidate Miller Baker. (Yes, that’s Barker vs. Baker… remember that all-important “R” in there!)
Miller Baker has the support of anti-choice politicians like Delegate Bob Marshall, Delegate Dave Albo, and Senator Mark Obenshain, who earlier this year patroned two anti-choice bills — one to prevent a woman from using her own money in the free market to purchase private insurance that would cover abortion care (SB 1202) and another to grant constitutional rights to zygotes, which would effectively ban legal abortion, put common birth control methods in jeopardy, and potentially criminalize miscarriages (SB 1207). With the backing of politicians like Sen. Obenshain, we know that Miller Baker would support an extreme anti-choice agenda that undermines access to safe, legal abortion, family planning and reproductive health care access for Virginia women.
We know we can count on Senator Barker to stand up for women’s rights and health and point out the true agenda of anti-choice legislation both in the Committee on Education and Health and on the floor of the Senate. As we’ve been discussing this week, because Virginia’s state Senate is “mixed-choice,” we cannot afford to lose even one pro-choice vote this November. Re-electing Senator Barker will help make sure the government does not further intrude into the private family and medical decisions of Virginia women.
Senator George Barker will continue to be a strong pro-choice leader in Richmond. Learn how you can get involved to get out the pro-choice vote by visiting our Elections page. Make sure to get out and vote on Tuesday, November 8 and remind all your pro-choice friends of the importance of their vote this year.
