One of my favorite organizations, National Advocates for Pregnant Women, has created a fantastic video highlighting the threats that “personhood” legislation poses for women who have chosen to carry a pregnancy to term.
It’s obvious that proponents of defining personhood from the moment of fertilization are working to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate access to safe, legal abortion in the United States. We often talk about how this kind of legislation would impact access to many forms of birth control, like the Pill and IUDs. What we don’t always recognize, though, is how these kinds of bills open the door to government involvement in every medical decision women and their families make when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth.
You may think the people behind Personhood USA are just an extreme fringe of the anti-choice movement–but right here in Virginia, in 2007, 43 members of the House of Delegates voted for a bill that would have established personhood from the moment of fertilization. State Senator Ken Cuccinelli, who is currently running for Attorney General, co-patroned the bill.
