When you talk to your legislators, do you expect an honest response?
Of course you do. Virginians place their trust in the politicians they elect. Unfortunately, some politicians don’t respect their constituents enough to give them the truth about their voting record – politicians like Delegate David Albo (R-42).
Recently Del. Albo’s constituents contacted him to express their outrage that he voted to defund Planned Parenthood in Virginia (to read the e-mail correspondence between Del. Albo and one of his constituents, please visit Planned Parenthood VA’s blog). Del. Albo had the audacity to respond saying he did not vote to defund Planned Parenthood – an outright lie. Del. Albo did vote to completely defund Planned Parenthood in Virginia. He voted in favor of Budget Item 4-5.04#2h, which states:
“j. Medical Services: No expenditures from general, special, or other nongeneral fund sources may be made out of any appropriation by the General Assembly to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. or any subsidiary or affiliate thereof. Explanation: (This amendment is self-explanatory).”
Constituents demand legislators who not only protect their reproductive health, but also are worthy of their trust. Apparently, Del. Albo fulfills neither of those requests.
Voting to deny funding to an organization that provides a variety of reproductive health services is poor policy. Lying about that vote, however, is dishonest and disrespectful.
